Bali Connection

Today is the day!!!:) Today I start my trip to BALIIIII!!!! :) I haven't been awared of "what was coming" till this morning when I woke up and I realized today was the day!, the day when one of my dreams was coming true :). Indonesia, I have dreamed about it since I was a kid and today (again) "is the day". I have to thank Alain (moonrocks) for making everything much easier, I haven't had to think about almost anything, just my flight, boards, bikinis and, of course, my passport!! haha

These are the boards I am taking with me

They are really similar to each other, one of them a bit wider than the other, but both 5'11''. I love these two boards, Gilito made them to me last year and they work great for me :)

However, before going to "paradise" I had to clean them a little bit :) Getting ready the boards :)

They look brand-new now :)

Finally, yesterday after work, I started and finished (haha) to prepare everything :).

I cannot stop thinking I am missing something, but do not know what... can yout think of anything???

Now ready to go :)!

noooo, I am not going by car to Bali!!! hahaha I am just going to Madrid to catch my flight from there :) hehehehe

I will try to have you all updated :)

Have a great day, I am sure I will!! :)

Sunday with friends

Last Sunday was a great day!!!travelling and surfing with my "crazy" friends... qué personajes!!! jajajjaa

The morning started with messages from everyone saying they were going to Zarautz to surf there (7am). Mikel and me were a bit late and we picked up Olatz at the beach to take her with us (8:30am)

Sleeping Beauty

Taxi Driver

By the time we got to the beach (9am), Iker and Ion were supposed to be already there surfing. We toke a look at the waves and they were MASSIVEss!!!

We didnt see anyone surfing and we were wondering where our friends could be when we saw Ion "de esta guisa" jajajajja he had been there for 20mins trying to figure out what to do... hahaha

Dr Jekyll and Mr. Hyde

But what was even better was when we saw someone walking by the beach coming back from a failed try to get some waves and we realized it was our other friend Iker!!hahahhaha

The Fearless

Great views

The crew :)

Finally we decided to change to another beach and went to Deba to try to catch some waves there. It was good at the begining but after a while the tide went out and it was impossible to catch more waves, so we went out and have some breakfast :)

Olatz morning present :)

I love these days when you just know you are going surfing with your friends somewhere, although you dont even know where :).

Queen of the "Nesken Uribe Kosta"

Last Saturday took place the 3rd edition of the "Open Nesken Surf Uribe Kosta", the women surf festival that takes place in Sopelana to celebrate the "International Women Day". There are two categories, one for those who usually compete (Open A) and another one for those who have just started to practise this great sport :) (Open B). No one wants to miss this event because it has the best prizes of all contests "a trip to Lanzarote", so most of the best Spanish women surfers show up in order to win it.

Although we had the check-in at 8:30, the waves were really big and kind of a mess so the organizers decided to wait till midday to start.

My heat was the last of round 1, and although I try to focus and look for the best waves but the conditions were changing all the time and it was really hard to find a good spot. I did not do well in my first heat, but I was lucky enough to make it through. I have surfed there just a few times and it was really hard for me to find a good positioning in the water during the whole competition.

Leticia Canales, on the other hand, is a local at that beach, and you could see her finding great waves during most of her heats.

As the tide was coming up the waves were getting a bit better, which helped us in the final. Leti chose the lefties and I went to a different pick trying to catch some rights I saw during the previous heat. I could not hear anything during the final, so I had no idea about how the other competitors were doing. I caught two nice rights which let me do some good turns and the rest of the heat I was paddeling all the time trying not to lose the position in the water because the current was really strong.

Nice bottom turn of Leti in a great looking left during the final

Altough it was hard to be in the place, some of the rights had a great wall to do nice turns

When I came out of the water most of the people came to me saying I had done really well, I was happy with my surfing but because I was in a different pick I didn't know how the others had done it. We had to wait one day to know the results, because the awards ceremony was the next day with other events related to the celebration of the International Women Day.

And..... yess!!! I won!!! :) I was soooo happyyyyyy!!!! what a great feeling to be up there again!!!! :)

Open A podium

Open A and Open B podiums :)

they made me speak!! I was a bit ashamed so I just gave thanks to the organizers and all the girls that participated in the event!

Coming back or re-inventing herself?

I do not know what Steph Gilmore is doing this year, if coming back from a hard year like last one or re-inventing herself. What I know is that she is showing her best surf ever!!!! Here you have an interview she did right after winning her 1st title of the year, which I am sure is not going to be the only one!

Laura knocked you out of the Roxy Pro in the quarterfinals last year, and you beat her in the final this year. Did that feel like revenge?
It wasn’t really revenge. I’d completely forgotten about last year. It basically felt like a fresh start for me.
You don’t seem like the type who surfs out of a need for revenge.
Oh, you’d be surprised. [Laughs.] There are definitely different emotions that I go through to change my frame of mind when I’m in a heat to help me be more assertive or aggressive. But it definitely wasn’t about revenge against Laura.
How does it feel to be leading the world title race again?
It feels really good, actually. I feel young and fresh and new to the whole thing. Last year went by so quickly, but it gave me time to think about things and do a lot of things outside of competing. So to come back and be in the number one spot again feels like new territory…and that’s a good thing.
You won four consecutive world titles [2007–2010], how hard is it to stay focused for that long?
I didn’t find it that hard, because it passed so quickly and I was having so much fun. To travel the world and be on tour is one of the most wonderful things. I was never thinking about staying inspired or motivated, it was just a matter of, “Wow, how cool is this?” I was surfing new waves, winning all kinds of events, and then going and dancing and celebrating with my friends afterward. The sports psychology of it all never really came into it for me. It’s not until now that I’m really thinking of those sort of things.
What kind of things were you thinking about this past year that hadn’t really occurred to you in the previous four?
The biggest thing was dealing with emotions and traumas, and how you can change your frame of mind when you’re competing and performing. Because our Tour ended pretty early last year, I went seven months without surfing a heat. So my Round One heat at the Roxy Pro was really nerve-wracking and exciting. But I’d had the chance to think about what I wanted to do and how I wanted to achieve things, and I’d realized how much I love being on Tour, competing, and being in that number one spot. I was kind of all over the place before the year started. I did a couple different kinds of trips; I went to Africa and Switzerland. Everyone was saying, “Well that’s not really the best preparation for surfing the Tour.” But it turns out that it was, because it made me appreciate being on tour and how much I love it.
You won at your home break. How much preparation do you really have to do for that?
Snapper is literally 200 meters from my bed. But honestly, I don’t free surf Snapper that much. Last year I spent way more time at D-Bah. I can just get way more waves out there. But I definitely have that local advantage, where I can just roll into it and surf it confidently.
You were saying that last year you came to the realization that you do “love” the Tour. I’m sure any surfer could understand and appreciate that realization. At the beginning of 2011, were you internally questioning your “love” for the Tour life?
Oh yeah, completely. I was at the events last year, but my heart was really elsewhere. I wished I was at home recovering, even though being away from home felt safer to me. It was quite a radical mix of emotions. But overall, last year was probably my best year in the sense that I learned so much about myself, and it helped me put the puzzle together so I could bring my A-game to the first event this year.
It must be great to have a feeling of renewed positivity toward it.
It is. It’s like reinventing yourself. I think that’s how Kelly stays so young and so inspired. He’s always learning and reinventing himself. Kind of like Madonna! [Laughs.] She’s 50, and she still rocks it out at the Super Bowl half time!
Speaking of reinvention, as a reader of surf media and a de facto consumer of marketing campaigns, I feel like I’m watching you go through a transformation. It seems like your artsy side is being highlighted as well as your passion for creativity. Is that a real thing you’re experiencing, or is that just marketing?
It is a transformation of my personality and myself. Probably the reason I joined up with Quiksilver was because they understood me and where I wanted to go and who I wanted to be. Not that anyone really knows who they ultimately want to be, but we connected in that sense of how an athlete wants to be represented and marketed. “Transformation” is a great word for what’s been going on with me. My first four years on tour were the first real chunk of my career, then I got to have a year to dilute everything, figure things out, and clean my bedroom, so to speak. [Laughs.] It’s funny, people down at the contest site were saying, “She’s back.” But I just think it’s a new me.
